STANSBURY ISLAND

Stansbury Island (Tooele) is usually a peninsula extending from the southwest shore of Great Salt Lake, but it becomes an island during high water. Captain Howard Stansbury's officers named the feature in his honor when they were surveying the lake in 1850. For a short period of time, it was previoulsy known as Kimballs Isalnd for H.C. Kimball, a member of the 1847 pioneers. Kimball ran his livestock on the island. Albert Carrington, an assistand to Captain Stansbury, recorded an early name of "Dome" for the island.
