VERDURE

Verdure (San Juan) is several miles south of Monticello. In 1887 Verdure was established as the first settlement in The Blues (Abajo Mountains). The community was inhabited by people from Bluff who settled on South Montezuma Creek, which was later known as Verdure Creek. Although Monticello was settled one year after Verdure, Monticello proved to be a more productive agricultural area. Therefore, as Monticello grew, Verdure declined. Today it is private ranch property.
