Markagunt Plateau (Garfield, Iron) is the southern most member of the western range of plateaus distinguished by Dutton in his "High Plateaus of Utah." Brian Head is the highest point at 11,315' (3,449m). The general boundaries of the plataeu are U-20 on the north, US-89 on the east, U-14 on the south, and I-15 on the west. "Markagunt" is a Piute word meaning "Highland of Trees." The plateau was named by Almon Thompson, a member of the Powell surveys. |
