WASHAKIE Washakie (Box Elder) is a center of a small Shoshone Indian reservation on the Malad River, south of Portage. The settlement was named for Shoshone Chief Washakie, who was on friendly terms with the Mormons. The indians requested help from the Mormons, who sent missionaries to educate them in farming and stock raising techniques. John W. Van Cott |
