Wales (Sanpete) is four miles west of Chester on US-177. The community was settled by Mormon immigrants from Wales who named their community in memory of their mother country. The settlers were coal miners who came to mine the newly discovered coal beds. The first name for the community was Coalbed, later Coalville. The name Wales was formally adopted on September 6, 1869.
