SILVER REEF Silver Reef (Washington) was established in 1866 one mile west of Leeds at the southwest edge of the Pine Valley Mountains. The original name was Bonanza Flats, which was taken from the name placed on Hyrum Jocob's store. Prior to 1866 silver had never been found in sandstone, so it created quite a sensation when silver lode was discovered in a protruding sandstone ledge. By the 1880s the reef was mined out and the settlement was abandoned. John W. Van Cott |
