SCOFIELD Scofield (Carbon) is on U-96 south of Scofield Reservoir at the junction of Pleasant Valley Creek and Winter Quarters Canyon. It was settled in 1879 as a ranching community that utilized the wild meadow grasses in the area. Coal was discoverd shortly after and by 1882 the railroad was brought into the valley. The rapidly developing community was named for General Charles W. Scofield, a timber contractor and a local mine official. The town had and early name of Pleasant Valley. John W. Van Cott |
