MAYFIELD

Mayfield (Sanpete) is twelve miles southwest of Manti on Twelve Mile Creek. The settlement was first called Arrapene for Chief Arrapene, a friendly Ute chief who made his camp in this area. In the early days the community was divided by the creek. The south side was called New London because one of the settleres had recently married a young woman from London, England. During Mayfield's early history, the name was changed several times. When the United Order was practiced, the town was known as Order. Other names were Cobblehaven, Skinny, Skunk, and Frog Hollow. The beautiful flowers appearing along the hillsides in the early spring suggested the present name.
