Manila (Daggett) is on U-43 and U-44 near the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. It had earlier names such as Chambers for R. C. Chambers who helped finance the Lucerne Valley project; Lewisallen for Lewis Allen, a prominent early settler; and the early name Lucerne for the alfalfa grown in the valley which was sold to local stockmen for winter feed. Adolph Jessen, the surveyor for the settlement, named the settlement Manila in 1898 in commemoration of Admiral Dewey's victory over the Spanish fleet at Manila, Philippine Islands. In 1904 local sources continued to refer to the town as Lucerne or Manila.
