LIBERTY

Liberty (Weber) is on U-162 east of North Ogden and north of Eden. The settlement was laid out in 1892 as an outgrowth of Eden. There are several reasons presented for the name source. One version states that shortly after the Civil War the name "liberty" mas very popular throughout the country. Another source claims that after John Freeman had been having trouble with range cattle, he told his neighbors, Fisher and Morris of North Ogden, that since people seemed to be taking a lot of liberties with property, he thought Liberty was an appropriate name for the settlement. Another reference states that the community was named after the Liberty Prison at Liberty, Clay County, Missouri. The Prophet Joseph Smith of the Mormon Church was held in this jail at one time.
