Enterprise (Washington) is a small agricultural community located on U-18 at the south end of the Escalante Desert near the mouth of Shoal Creek. Many Enterprise settlers came from Hebron, a settlement located further up Shoal Creek. These people gardually started to abandon Hebron because the local mines were shutting down, an earthquake struck in 1902, and there was a lack of water. The 1902 San Francisco earthquake demolished the last of old Hebron, and the new, undamaged Enterprise now had a population of approximately one hundred families. Enterprise was originally named Shoal Creek. The name change relected their ability to adjust to unexpected problems. The settlers considered their new home an enterprising community.
