Castle (Garfield) was in Castle Valley between Cedar Breaks and Panguitch Lake. It was an early settlement established along the tributaries of the upper Sevier River, near the divide where the headwaters of the south-draining Virgin River originates. The area was pioneered in 1872 by Meltiar Hatch and his two wives, Pamelia Snyder Hatch and Mary Ann Ellis Hatch. The family operated a cattle ranch. The town was named for the spectacular castle-like topography of the surrounding cliffs.
