Beryl is a Union Pacific Rail Road siding nine miles northwest of Newcastle and thirteen miles north of Beryl Junction. This area was once referred to as the Escalante Desert but today is known as the Escalante Valley. Improved Irrigation and deep well pumping has allowed most of it to become agriculturally productive. In 1901 it was named Beryl, a word of French origin which identifies the semi-precious stone found in the vicinity.
