Antelope Island is located in the sourtheast sector of the Great Salt Lake, west of Farmington Bay. Osborne Russell, a trapper, made an 1841 entry in his journal referring to the presence of antelope and buffalo on the island. The island had various early names which were used interchangeably, such as Antelope, Church, and Buffalo Island. The name Church Island originated from the Mormon Church's early use of the island as a herd ground around 1849.
